“Nós celebramos VOCÊS”. Esta é a mensagem que a NHL postou em sua conta oficial no Twitter para apoiar os fãs que comemoram o Dia do Orgulho (Pride) nesta sexta-feira (26), incentivando os fãs de hóquei que são membros da comunidade LGBTQ + a “mostrar seu ORGULHO!” com a hashtag #HockeyIsForEveryone. Equipes e jogadores também participam do movimento de apoio ao Pride Month.
“Não há melhor maneira de fazer com que jovens atletas e fãs se sintam seguros e bem-vindos do que ter seus ídolos esportivos e as equipes que eles acompanham mostrando esse tipo de reconhecimento e apoio. Esta era a visão original de You Can Play, e nossa parceria com a NHL e a NHLPA fez com que de alguma forma atletas e aliados LGBTQ pudessem se sentir bem ”, disse Brian Kitts, co-fundador e presidente da You Can Play, em comunicado.
A NHL e a NHLPA (associação de jogadores) mantêm uma parceria com a You Can Play desde 2013. You Can Play é uma organização de defesa contra a homofobia no esporte, fundada em 2012 por Patrick Burke – diretor sênior de segurança de jogadores da NHL. De acordo com um comunicado da NHL, o projeto You Can Play gerou apoio para colegas gays de mais de 100 jogadores profissionais de hóquei. A NHL tem mais de 700 jogadores.

O atacante do New Jersey Devils, Kurtis Gabriel, é um dos defensores da inclusão da NHL, e ele usa o Pride Tape – uma fita na cor de arco-íris enrolada na parte superior do stick (taco) – não apenas na Pride Night, quando cada equipe dedica uma noite de jogo à causa do orgulho LGBTQ.
“Fui criado por minha mãe para tratar as pessoas da maneira que você quer ser tratado e isso significa ser inclusivo e aceitar as pessoas como elas são, porque eu também quero ser aceito”, disse Gabriel em junho. “Para mim, usar o Pride Tape é apenas um pequeno gesto que espero que percorra um longo caminho. Qualquer um pode jogar o jogo que todos amamos e apreciamos muito”.

O comissário da NHL, Gary Bettman, disse que a liga espera promover a inclusão o ano todo.
“Em desfiles e eventos na América do Norte comemorando o Pride, a NHL e nossos parceiros participarão para enviar uma mensagem clara e inequívoca – o hóquei é para todos”, disse Bettman. “Estamos imensamente orgulhosos do trabalho que os membros da nossa NHL e as famílias do hóquei fazem para que todos se sintam bem-vindos no melhor jogo do mundo. Promover a inclusão é uma missão durante todo o ano para a NHL e estamos animados em destacar alguns de nossos esforços durante este Mês do Orgulho”.
